Breakfast is definitely an important part of your day.  It’s the fuel that gets you jump started,  so I’m always on the look out for delicious breakfast recipes to share with all of you. Then I came upon Maggie’s blog, Dog Hill Kitchen, and saw the picture above and it stopped me cold.  Those plump, delicious looking cherries really caught my eye and I knew that having them as a way to start my day would be a real treat.

As for Dog Hill Kitchen, it’s a blog that focuses on from scratch cooking utilizing as many home-grown, local and organic ingredients as is possible.  If you happen to be lactose intolerant, but have a sweet tooth, check out Maggie’s dairy-free dessert recipes.  What’s also cool is that she chronicled the building of her family’s dream home at her Building at Dog Hill Blog. Fire and Ice Sour Cherry Oatmeal
(serves 1)

1/3 cup Bob’s Red Mill, Organic Scottish Oatmeal
1 cup water
a large pinch of salt
1 cup  frozen sour cherries, no sugar added
1 Tbs. Y.S. Organic Bee Farms Raw Honey
1 -1/2 tsp.  Nutiva Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil

Directions

  1. Cook the oatmeal with the water and salt.  Two minutes in a microwave or use a stovetop.
  2. Top the steaming hot oatmeal with the frozen cherries and then drizzle over the honey and coconut oil.  The cold from the cherries will make the honey taffy-like and the coconut oil hard like Magic Shell.
  3. Eat right away to enjoy the textural and temperature contrasts.
