Suggested Uses for Frankincense Essential Oil

Frankincense was one of the gifts given to the baby Jesus from the three Magi. People often wonder why this is so, after all, isn’t it just a nicely scented tree? Actually, at one time, frankincense was valued as highly as gold. It was held in this high regard for thousands of years. Frankincense not only had many healing properties, but was also burned to rid the ‘ sick of evil spirits, and to purify body and soul. Because of its ability to slow down and deepen the breath, frankincense helps to keep prayer and meditation focused. Unsurprisingly, the Egyptians used it in the embalming process, but surprisingly they used it in cosmetic face masks as well. Today, frankincense is as highly valued by aromatherapists as it was in days of yore. With benefits that take care of both external and internal problems, it truly is worth its weight in gold.

Therapeutic uses:

Aging skin, asthma, bedsores, blemishes, bronchitis, chilliness, colds, coughs, cystitis, fatigue, flu, heavy periods, hemorrhoids, labor, laryngitis, meditation, menstrual health, nasal congestion, oily skin, poor circulation, prayer, respiration, rheumatism, scars, shortness of breath, sores, urinary tract infections and wounds.

Essential Oil Applications:

For asthma, bronchitis, coughs, colds, flu, and laryngitis, use 2-3 drops in 1 ounce of carrier oil. Rub on chest for asthma, bronchitis, coughs, and cold, and on throat for laryngitis. Can also use 2-3 drops in a diffuser or steam inhalation.

For bedsores, scars, and wounds, use 2-3 drops in a cold compress and apply to affected area. Can also be added to a cotton ball and dabbed on directly; use lightly.

For blemishes or oily skin, wet a cotton ball and add a drop or.two of oil. Dab affected areas lightly.

To improve circulation, mix 4-5 drops with 1 ounce of carrier oil and massage on body. Can also use in bath water, To help alleviate fatigue, use 3-5 drops in a diffuser.

For hemorrhoids, add 2-3 drops to 2 tablespoons of liquid lanolin, and massage into affected areas.

During labor, use a few drops in a diffuser. It will help calm the mother-to-be, and also help her to focus, especially if using Lamaze.

To rejuvenate mature complexions, wash face, then use 2-3 drops with 1 ounce of almond carrier oil, and rub gently onto face.

During menstruation, use 8-10 drops in bath water, and take a nice, long soak. Helps with a variety of menstrual issues, like cramps, loss of focus, and fatigue.

For nasal congestion, sprinkle a few drops on a handkerchief and inhale periodically. Can also add 2-3 drops to a diffuser or steam inhalation.

To help regulate heavy periods, use 3-4 drops in 1 ounce of carrier oil and massage on lower abdomen area regularly. To help facilitate prayer and/or meditation, use 4-5 drops in a diffuser.

For rheumatism, use 3-5 drops in 1 ounce of carrier oil and massage on affected areas. Can also use in a hot compress.

To help relieve shortness of breath, use 3-5 drops in a steam inhalation or diffuser.

To help alleviate urinary tract infections, use 8-10 drops in bath water, in addition to using doctor prescribed medication.

Mixes Well With:

Bergamot, cinnamon, clary sage, geranium, grapefruit,jasmine, lavender, lemon, myrrh, neroli, orange, patchouli, pine, rose, sandalwood, tangerine, and ylang ylang.

Extraction Method:

Steam distillation.

Parts Used:

Oleoresin.

Safety Information:

No special precautions with frankincense, however it’s best used it moderation.
