Suggested Uses for Pennyroyal Essential Oil

Pennyroyal is a member of the mint family, and exudes a fresh, minty, herbaceous scent. While its scent is actually a bit more powerful than other mints, its therapeutic value is actually not as strong. Pennyroyal was used frequently by Ancients for a variety of ailments, and remains current in the British Herbal Pharmacopoeia, which recommends it for flatulence, intestinal colic, the common cold, delayed menstruation, and gout. However, its primary use in today’s world of aromatherapy is in pet care. Pennyroyal was a favorite of Pliny the Elder in the fight against fleas, and remains a favorite natural enemy of fleas to this day.

Therapeutic uses:

Colds, delayed menstruation, excessive sweating, flatulence, gout, insect repellent, and intestinal colic.

Essential Oil Applications

For colds, use 2-3 drops in a diffuser.

For delayed menstruation, use 2-3 drops in one ounce of carrier oil and massage on lower abdomen. DO NOT USE if there is any chance of pregnancy.

For excessive sweating, use 2-3 drops in a carrier oil, and dab on underarms.

For flatulence, gout, and intestinal colic, use 2-3 drops in a diffuser.

To protect your dog or cat from fleas, place a few drops on their collar; wait for it to dry before placing around pet’s neck. Can also add 2-3 drops to pet shampoo; be sure to rinse pet thoroughly after shampooing.

As an insect repellent, place a few drops of oil on a cotton ball, and place in infested areas. Do not place in areas where a pet could easily find them.

Mixes Well With:

Citronella, geranium, rosemary and sage.

Extraction Method:

Steam distillation.

Parts Used:

Fresh or slightly dried herb.

Safety Information:

Avoid completely if pregnant or nursing. Can be toxic if ingested.
