With all the chemicals, toxins and impurities in the environment, it’s important to do your best to avoid contaminants. However, since totally avoiding toxins is nearly impossible, one thing you can do is eat foods that help your body detoxify.
The organs in your body that responsible for detoxifying include the bowels, liver, skin, kidneys and lungs. These organs are constantly removing impurities from your system; give them the following foods to help them do their work effectively:
For all its culinary wonders, garlic is also extremely healthful. It aids in producing sulfur compounds and selenium, and both are critical in detoxifying the body. Garlic also helps the body produce glutathione, a powerful antioxidant. Garlic’s most important job in the detox process is supporting your liver’s ability to produce digestive enzymes. Since your liver is the chief detoxifying organ, eating garlic daily will ensure a healthy liver that can effectively eliminate toxins.
One of the most powerful detoxifying foods are beets, those humble, deep red earthy vegetables. Beets are prime liver food, containing antioxidants, betaine, fiber, iron, folate, betacyanin, betanin, betalains and pectin. Pectin helps flush toxins out of the body once they’ve been removed by the liver. Betaine supports the liver in detoxifying. Beets can be juiced, grated, pickled, roasted or boiled.
All citrus fruits such as lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruits get digestive enzymes working strong. All contain a hefty dose of vitamin C, one of nature’s most potent detoxifiers. Vitamin C heals the toxic damage caused by pharmaceuticals in the liver and helps rid the body of heavy metals such as mercury, aluminum and cadmium. Eating foods high in vitamin C helps your body flush toxins. Juice a lemon into the water your drink throughout the day to add more toxin-flushing power and to alkalize your system.
Leafy, Green Foods
If you can eat more leafy, green vegetables then you’ll be giving your body an extra detoxing boost. Eating them raw is even better. Eat a daily salad full of broccoli, kale, cabbage, avocados and sprinkle crushed sea vegetables on top. Or juice your greens or make a green smoothie a daily celebration of your detoxifying process. Add sprouts, wheat grass or barley greens for an added boost.
